Which fasteners to use with brick

When faced with a project that involves using fasteners in brick, you might be tempted just to use any screws or nails you have lying around left over from your last project. Unfortunately, not all screws are created equal and, when it comes to brick, using the wrong fasteners could damage not only the brickwork itself but also your tools.

Luckily if you need fasteners for use with brick you’ve come to the right place. We’ve put together this quick, handy guide to fasteners perfect for use with brick, giving you peace of mind so you can get on with your project knowing that you’re using the right things in the right way.

Some of the most common fasteners for use with brick are the following:

Self-tapping masonry screws

Self-tapping screws are quite simply screws which can tap (or cut) their own thread (or grooves) into whatever material they are screwing into. In the case of self-tapping masonry screws, this material is usually stone, concrete or brick.

With self-tapping masonry screws, it’s a good idea to drill a small pilot hole as a guide for your screw before it’s screwed in. This pilot hole should be a bit smaller than the diameter of your screw.

Concrete screws

Concrete screws are specifically designed for use with, as the name suggests, concrete. In addition to concrete, they work perfectly with masonry and brick.

The design features that make them such a perfect fit for use with brick are:

  • Longer shafts for firmer anchoring into the brick
  • Deeper threads for the better grip and resistance needed when working with brick

These features make concrete screws ideal for use with brick without the need for a plug for grip.

Sleeve anchors

Sleeve anchors are also specifically designed for use with masonry, including brick. Once inserted into the brick, they expand when the bolt on them is tightened. This forms an extra secure seal against the brick, holding the fastening firmly and strongly in place.

Hammer drills

Obviously, hammer drills are not fasteners, but still worth knowing about before you embark on a brick fastening project.

Hammer drills, sometimes referred to as impact drills or percussive drills, are perfect for drilling both holes and screws into brick because the drill bit doesn’t just spin, it also has a mechanism which adds a hammering motion. This makes it ideal for drilling through very hard materials such as stone, concrete and brick.

A normal electric drill may well work on brick when paired with the fasteners mentioned above, but your best bet to make sure you get the job done without damaging your brickwork, your screws, or your drill is a hammer drill.
