Can construction screws be used outside?

Blog thumbnail

Not all screws are created equal, and for outdoor projects, you need to be sure your fasteners won’t let you down over time. Lots of fasteners are prone to rust and corrosion and are likely to break after being exposed to the elements for an extended period of time.

Luckily there are construction screws out there which are ideal for use outdoors. The key is to use screws made of the right material, so you can rest easy in the knowledge that they can withstand the wear and tear of being outside.

It’s also important to note that screws are much more reliable than nails or other fasteners in outdoor projects as their threading helps them to stay secure in difficult conditions. The extra grip and friction that comes with screws means they can keep a join fastened tightly even in wood which expands and shifts in changing weather.

Here are some of the screws to look out for when working outside:

Stainless steel screws

Whilst most screws are made of steel, only stainless steel screws will stand the test of time outdoors. This is because, unlike more common steel screws, stainless steel screws are resistant to corrosion. The higher the grade, the more resistant to corrosion.

Stainless steel screws are more expensive than common steel screws, but they are significantly less brittle and more resistant to rust and corrosion, making them a much better bet for use outdoors. For outdoor projects, it really is worth spending a bit more money and using stainless steel screws.

Galvanised screws

Galvanised screws are another good option for fasteners to use outdoors. Galvanised screws are coated in a layer of zinc, making them very resistant to corrosion. The thicker the coating, the more resistant the screw to corrosion, so for the most durable results you should go for hot dipped galvanised screws, over electro-plated galvanised screws.

Galvanised screws are also a good option for use with treated wood, as the chemicals in some treated lumber can react with steel screws.

Silicon bronze screws

Silicon bronze screws are the gold standard for corrosion-resistant fasteners. They can withstand constant exposure to water and even salt water, which is why they are used in the marine industry for boat building, among other uses.

Silicon bronze screws can be more than double the cost of stainless steel screws, so are generally only recommended for use under very specific circumstances, such as if you’re building a boat or another project which will be exposed to water on a very regular basis.
